If your PRAG inverter is not charging the batteries, there are several common causes you can check before contacting technical support. This guide walks you through the troubleshooting steps for PRAG inverters in the 1kVA to 2.5kVA range.

Step 1: Check Input Power

First, confirm that your inverter is receiving input power at the terminals:

  • Verify that the power cable is properly connected and not loose.
  • Check that the wall socket or power source is functioning (test with another device).
  • If the inverter is not receiving power, rectify the connection and ensure it is plugged in properly.
  • If the inverter is receiving power but still not charging, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Check Input Breakers

Your inverter system has breakers that can trip and prevent charging:

  • Check the breaker on the back of the PRAG inverter — if it is off, turn it on.
  • Check the breaker inside the control box on the wall — if it is off, turn it on.
  • If both breakers are in the correct position and the inverter still is not charging, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Test Different Power Sources

Determine whether the inverter charges from grid power but not from a generator (or vice versa):

  • Check if the inverter charges when on grid power (NEPA/utility). If yes, proceed to test generator power.
  • Check if the inverter charges while on generator power. If it does not charge on generator but does on grid, the issue is likely generator frequency or capacity.

If the inverter does not charge on generator:

  • Check generator frequency: The PRAG inverter requires a frequency of 50Hz to charge. If the generator frequency is off, reset it to 50Hz.
  • Check generator capacity: The generator capacity should be greater than the inverter capacity by at least 5kVA. An undersized generator cannot provide enough power to both run appliances and charge the inverter batteries.
